Our favorite, one and only, YouTube has started charging money for subscribing to some channels. I guess that the money they earn from online advertisements is not enough for them. YouTube has finally made this decision after years of experimenting ways of earning revenue. Malik Ducard, YouTube's director of content partnerships says "This is just the beginning". Maybe this guy just wants to tell us that there are going to be a lot more paid channels coming on YouTube. Now that they have introduced paid channel subscriptions, it is quite possible that TV shows, movies and even TV channels may get to YouTube, making the website a step closer to cable TV.
With this move, YouTube will surely earn a lot of money and compete with paid video websites like Hulu and Netflix which have millions of paying customers. It has been announced that YouTube will keep slightly less than half of the revenue generated by paid channels.
Prices of each paid channel start from US$ 0.99. Unfortunately, none of these channels will be available in India.
